MARI LIANNE PHOTOGRAPHY: Blog https://marilianne.zenfolio.com/blog en-us (C) MARI LIANNE PHOTOGRAPHY [email protected] (MARI LIANNE PHOTOGRAPHY) Wed, 07 Feb 2024 05:56:00 GMT Wed, 07 Feb 2024 05:56:00 GMT Leading Water Forward Symposium Professional Headshots https://marilianne.zenfolio.com/blog/2023/3/leading-water-forward-symposium-professional-headshots Well hello there!

Who: My name is Mari Fernandez from mari lianne photography. I’ve been a portrait and wedding photographer for over 16 years. Thank you for considering me to take your modern professional head shots.

When: Thursday, April 13, 2023

Where: Water Resources Education Center
4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver, WA  98661

How: Our session will last 10 minutes. I will use various natural areas around the center as your backdrop. In case of inclement weather, we will take your portraits under cover.  I’ll help you with posing and positioning. You can be standing or sitting. Images will be cropped just below your waist. I want you to feel your best, confident and ready to take on the world. If you're not entirely sure of what to wear, bring a couple options including jackets, scarves and jewelry.

What: Within 10 business days, I’ll email you your personal password-protected gallery. The gallery will have between 6-12 images.  You will select 4 images for me to edit further to fit your needs like teeth whitening, skin smoothing, etc. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email if you need help with clothing options or if you have any insecurities (we all do, cause I do) and I’ll do my best to let your beautiful favorite features shine.

Tips for clothing, hair and makeup:
  • -Look:  It's very important to think ahead of what is your best side.  I have a best side too.  I am as well as other women are self-conscious of certain facial features.  I have a wicked birthmark under the left side of my eye so I always sure to let friends who take my portrait know not to feature that.  Tell me what your love about your face and your body and what you aren't comfortable to share.
  • -Comfort:  The outfit you choose should be something you love and feel comfortable wearing.  Make sure it's not too tight otherwise you'll feel like wanting to tug at parts of your clothing. Make sure it's not too loose otherwise your shape will be lost in the photo.  If there are buttons on your shirt, be sure to wear the appropriate undergarments so button holes don't pull at the seams or stretch too much.
  • -Patterns or solid: Patterns are fine but mix it up with a solid.  Patterned shirt and solid jacket or vice versa.  We want to focus on your beautiful face and expression.
  • -Textures: Textures are your friend but be sure to pay attention to wrinkles if you have smooth textured clothing and to lint and hair if you have rougher textured clothing.
  • -Jewelry: Adding jewelry can speak volumes about your personality. It helps to accent your features and sometimes add a splash of color.  Feel free to bring some and we can figure out which would photograph the best.
  • -Coverup: Wearing a jacket, blazer or sweater can instantly switch up different looks.  Bring one if you like.
  • -Makeup: The main focus of your face is usually your eyes and mouth so select colors that compliment your skin tone. Bring some translucent powder and lip product in case we need them for touch ups.
  • -Glasses: It's totally fine to wear glasses for your head shots if you're usually seen wearing them.  They do need to be spotlessly clean otherwise the dust and fingerprints will show on your head shot.  If you only wear them to read but not often day to day, remember to remove them about 20-30 minutes before our time of portraits so that we don't end up with those pesky red marks on the sides of our nose.

Please, please, please feel free to email me at [email protected], text me at 503.407.7828 or leave a comment here with any questions or concerns. I would love to help you with anything and everything before your head shots.  It'll help me get to know you more beforehand and it will help make the session go smoothly as possible.

Senior Posing Ideas? https://marilianne.zenfolio.com/blog/2022/9/senior-posing-ideas I have a secret to tell you. I used to hate having my photos taken when I was in high school.  For real.  This girl.  The main reason?

What do I do with my hands?! Where should I place my feet? Bend the knees?  Do I tilt my head?

So I understand the hesitation when it comes to having your senior portraits done.  Especially when it comes to posing. Let me help!

I will do my best to give you direction with posing and expressions to do with your beautiful face!  My goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible during your session.  If a pose doesn't feel like it's "you" we can adjust!  I have two older daughters, you can say "nope!" to me.

There are so many posing options. You can be leaning on a wall or fence, sitting on some steps or grass, walking towards me, walking away from me while looking over your shoulder, swaying side to side (you can add a twist to this too!).  The easiest place to start is standing.

There are a couple positions you can place your feet when doing a standing pose.

  • Put all your weight on one leg, then extend your other leg out to the side. Either shoulder width away or further. Easy!
  • Stand with your feet close together. Then bend one knee. Super easy!
  • We can adjust this a little and when you bend the knee, bring your foot forward a bit.
  • Okay! Let's spice up the last pose.  Stand with your feet close together then bend your right knee, now rotate the right knee towards the right, lift up your right foot and place that right toe on the other side of your left foot.
  • Now do the opposite!
  • This next one requires a bit more balance.  Put your weight on your right leg, next bend your left knee, then lift your left heel and place it near your right ankle.

Now let's figure out what to do with your hands!  Here are some things you can do with both hands or we can do a combination of two things!

  • Place both hands down to your sides then put a slight bend in the elbow of one arm and move the hand up higher on your thigh.
  • With both your arms down hold on to the other elbow or wrist.
  • Put your thumb through a belt loop or your hand into the front or back pocket.
  • Place your hand on the smallest part of your waist.
  • Touch part of your hair, softly. Twirl it in your fingers for some fun.
  • Cross both arms in front of you. Like you're hugging yourself.  You can even bring up one hand to touch your collar bone or the side of your face.
  • Bend your arms and play with your fingertips or hands.
  • Place your hand up and to the side of your neck or the back of your head.

The great thing about the standing and hand poses is that you can do them while leaning against something too.

With your eyes and head, I may ask you to...

  • look at the camera,
  • look away from the camera so I can see your profile,
  • look down so I can see your pretty lashes.

When looking at me, I may ask you to tilt or turn your head a little.

With your facial expressions, I may ask you to...

  • give me a soft smile, with or without teeth,
  • smile big with teeth (the ultimate mom and grandma favorite expression)
  • do the ever so popular with teens, "the serious but soft" look.
  • But wait, usually when we are doing "the serious but soft" look, you'll end up giggling or laughing.  Bonus!

So sitting!

  • Knees pulled up with arms wrapped around both knees
  • Sitting up straight, one knee up and arms wrapped around it
  • Forearm casually on top of one knee, while the other rests on the thigh
  • Cross legged with knees pulled up around 45 degrees, elbows resting on knees and hands falling in between
  • Ditto above with elbows on knees but one or both fists resting under her chin
